MOSCOW, Nov 26 (Reuters) – Norway’s risk management and quality assurance firm DNV GL has suspended work on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project led by Russia’s Gazprom for fear of being sanctioned by the United States, it said on Thursday.

While the $11 billion project is led by Russia’s Gazprom, half of the funding comes from five European partners: Germany’s Uniper and BASF’s Wintershall unit, Anglo-Dutch oil company Shell, Austria’s OMV and France’s Engie.

It said the Security Service conducted searches at local charitable foundations in the Transcarpathian region checking “information about the involvement of the foreign fund in activities aimed at violating the state sovereignty of Ukraine.”

“Under these new guidelines, we find DNV GL’s verification activities linked to vessels with equipment serving the Nord Stream 2 project to be sanctionable. DNV GL has therefore ceased delivery of services that may fall under the scope of PEESA,” DNV GL said in emailed comments.

The network of Russian-linked accounts that had the most following were tied to Russian intelligence services. Facebook pulled 23 Facebook accounts, 6 Pages, and 8 Instagram accounts in this network. Facebook removed 214 Facebook users, 35 Pages, 18 Groups and 34 Instagram accounts in that network. The fake accounts mostly focused primarily on Syria and Ukraine. BUDAPEST/KYIV, Nov 30 (Reuters) – Hungary summoned the Ukrainian ambassador and accused its neighbor of intimidation on Monday after Ukraine´s state security service (SBU) raided the offices of ethnic Hungarians, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said.

The last network of Russian-linked accounts Facebook removed included one Page, five Facebook accounts, one Group and three Instagram accounts. The tech company said that this network tried to drive people to a site claiming to be an independent think-tank based primarily in Turkey. The fake accounts had links to people associated with the IRA, but Facebook said it isn’t clear if this troll farm is still active today.

It was not immediately clear what impact DNV GL’s move would have on the project. Construction of the 1,230 km pipeline is nearly finished but a final stretch of about 120 km still needs to be laid in Danish waters.

Russian interference in US elections has been a top concern after a Russian troll farm known as the Internet Research Agency used Facebook to post content to sow discord among Americans during the 2016 US presidential election. Some of the recent Russian-linked fake accounts that Facebook took down shared a small amount of content about the US, but it didn’t appear to be the primary focus of these networks.
